Story
Until last year, I had never really thought of the effects an illness like dementia can have. Then it hit, and it hit my family hard. In August 2017 my Nan was officially diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s. 2 days after her 77th birthday in November, she suffered a bleed on her brain, which caused the dementia to speed up considerably. My family spent days in intensive care and several weeks in hospitals fighting, and so did she. Within a couple of months our lives were turned upside down, she barely remembers her family, she can do very little for herself and needs constant professional support in a permanent home. The last few months have taught me just how drastically lives can change, and how quickly too.
1 in 3 young people know someone with Alzheimer’s, which I find truly heartbreaking. The money Alzheimer’s Society raises can help so many people, providing them extra support, giving them a little independence or providing some sort of friendship. But not only that, it can support so much research so we together, can help fight this horrible, sad illness.
Anyone who knows me know that exercise isn’t my thing, and that is why I am taking part in a 10 day trek in China in October. I want to raise as much money as I can, to make the lives of Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families just that little bit easier.
