I'm due to be running the Great North Run in September to raise money for the Stroke Association and the amazing work and research as well as the support that they offer for stroke victims. This is something I've chosen to do for my wonderful Grandad who had a stroke earlier this year.

Due to lack of funding the stroke unit at Darlington Memorial hospital was closed down, meaning that my Grandad had to be taken to Durham hospital instead meaning he was very far away from the family which wasnt ideal especially as he was unable to communicate properly with anyone.

Months down the line and he is still unable to talk, but has retained his cracking sense of humour, one of his exercises was to practice whistling to help strengthen his facial muscles, he gave it a good go when the family were round but everyone was disappointed as he couldn't do it, until he admitted that he had never been able to :)
