On the 19th March 2010, I will be grabbing my sleeping bag, a cardboard
box, plenty of padding and a raincoat to spend the night sleeping out
under the stars in Bath. This is in aid of Julian House, the charity
who over the last 20 years have been providing a night shelter and other
vital services to the many homeless folk in the city.
"The comment is sometimes made - ‘Why should I help the homeless when they’ve chosen to be on the streets?’ Homelessness isn’t a lifestyle of choice. No one sets out to become addicted to heroin and no one chooses to have a mental health problem. The women who turn up at the night shelter who are escaping domestic abuse do so out of desperation.
Once someone is homeless the road back to mainstream society is often very difficult and dangerous. Getting a bed at the night shelter is just the start of a process than can take many months. Only by tackling the underlying reasons why someone is homeless, can a lasting solution be found. They don’t come to Julian House because we're the easy option – often we’re the only option"
