I have been given the opoortunity to go to Southern India for three weeks over Christmas and New Year to work at the Russ Foundation (Registered charity no. 291251). This is an independent non-governmental organisation, working under the Good Foundation, which provides care for young girls from disadvantaged or parentless backgrounds. It works with local communities to promote maintenance of good health and well being, as well as providing education, counselling and training to young girls with the aim of improving their futures.Whilst in India myself and about twenty other students from my college will be involved in helping with the children’s recreation and education, currently 35 children between the ages 4 and 22 years live and learn at the Girls home. We will also be involved in helping with maintenance and construction projects at the Russ Foundation.
The foundation is 95% reliant on fundraising
by students from the college eight previous trips have raised in the region of
£18,000 each. The money that has been raised has gone towards the maintenance
of the children’s home, the purchase of a minibus to transport the children to
school, the building of and stocking of a dairy farm, a new kitchen, the
funding of major HIV/AIDS initiatives and the launch of women’s self-help
groups.
As a group we are aiming to fundraise as much as possible so far we have put on cakes sales, a big India Day at our college which included an indian dance that the whole group performed. Individuals in the group have also put on gigs, quiz nights, meals and tea parties all to raise money. Before we go out we will be holding many more fundraisers including putting on a big party in colchester for all the college students which i am involved with organising. This saturday i am also taking part in a skydive with 15 others from our group- any sponsorship would be brilliant!
