Story

We need your help to stage Redcliffe Remembers  - a Community Concert to mark the start of World War One

St Mary Redcliffe Church  has accepted an invitation from The Royal British Legion to participate in a national commemoration of the start of World War I.The nation will remember ‘lights going out over Europe’ on Monday 4 August as the moment war broke out. The national commemoration in London is being enhanced by other events all around the country, including at St Mary Redcliffe where we are holding a free candle-lit Community Concert.

The churchyard will be open and the public are encouraged to bring picnics to enjoy on the south lawn. The performance will be in church (and screened to the south churchyard) starting at 8.30pm and seating in church is unreserved. The programme will end with The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins during which candles around the church will be extinguished. At 11.00pm a flame will be taken from the final candle just before it is blown out.

That flame will be taken into St John’s Chapel, closed for restoration for the last few months, where a Candle of Remembrance will be lit and our World War One installation unveiled.

This moment in history is unique and we want to mark it with a Community Concert that brings everyone together from across the city and beyond.  The concert will be free to attend but to do this on the scale this occasion deserves we need your help to cover the significant costs associated with running an event of this size.

If you feel able, please help us to stage this momentous and poignant commemoration in memory of those who lost there lives during World War I by making a donation.

All proceeds above the cost of running Redcliffe Remembers will go to the Royal British Legion.

Whether or not you are able to help fund this event, please remember the date. We would love to see you on Monday 4 August.
