Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. This is the first and last marathon I will run and I am delighted to be "running" it in aid of Refugee Action (you can ask me again on 18 April 2011)/
Refugee Action is a really important organisation and its work is perhaps even more important than ever as cuts to public services begin to bite. I firmly believe that a fundamental measure of a society is how it welcomes those who seek refuge within it. Here are some examples of what your dontations can help Refugee Action to do:
• £25 can help provide face-to-face advice to help vulnerable refugee women understand their rights and entitlements. Imagine navigating a confusing, scary, asylum process in a new country without knowing what you and your children are allowed to do.
• £50 can help pay for a couple of nights’ shelter for a particularly vulnerable asylum seeker e.g. someone pregnant or disabled, who is not allowed to work and has no means of support. Imagine where you might turn if you had no right to work and no means of making a living in a new country.
• £100 could pay for young refugees in the UK on their own to participate in classes to improve their life skills like learning to cook, managing money and understanding personal safety. Imagine what it’s like being under 18 and living on your own for the first time in a strange country with no friends or family for support.
