Scott Irons

26/02/83 - 17/10/06

Scott was a fit, healthy, well balanced young man of great potential living a happy and fulfilling life until things took a dramatic turn when he had a seizure at 21 years old. Little did we know when we were stirred from our sleep what the next 2 years would bring and how they were about to shape his tragic destiny. It is your worst nightmare, and nobody on earth can alleviate the pain of watching life and hope being stolen from your child bit by bit while you are helpless to stop it. He was a fighter and a hero keeping high spirits amongst folk right to the end. We all know this is not the right order of things but with nobody to blame and no reason why, we must live with the legacy of that terrible experience forever. However, it was he who was cheated out of life and our feelings can be no match for his loss.

The next person to fall victim to this lottery on life could be you, or someone close to you. All we can do to fight back is try to provide the means for the teams of experts to do their stuff and hopefully find the breakthrough that will make a difference. It's too late for Scott but what this loyal group of family and friends do, they do out of respect for his memory and in his honour.

Please do what you can to help this very worthwhile cause and together we can make things better for future generations.

Thank you on behalf of all of the people involved in this event.

Douglas Irons

UPDATE 31 August 2009

We had a very successful day on Saturday with all the guys and girls putting in a great effort to cycle this very taxing route round Arran (despite hangovers). Jamie put in an amazing 4 hour time with a few of the other more serious challengers not far behind. Everyone got back to Brodick safely before it got dark and there were aching legs and numb bums galore. The girls from Northern Ireland showed true grit in finishing at their own pace, driven on I'm sure by a determination to prove the doubting boys wrong. Most of the group were first time visitors to Arran and they all appreciated the "Arran experience" in fact, some were already talking about coming back again as we made our way home on Sunday. A massive thanks to Sean and Gaz for getting this event off the ground and for the ladies in the support team for helping hold it together.

In addition to the main event Calum and his son Ged completed their own dual challenge arriving on the early ferry, cycling round the island and climbing goat fell too before catching the last ferry home - great stuff from a couple of fit guys.

The sponsorship is going well having reached four figures already. These guys and girls have done their bit so I appeal now for you to do yours and make a contribution to this extremely worthwhile cause. We can all then be satisfied we have done Scott proud, and just maybe helped a little in the fight to stop others suffering the same fate as him.

Thank you

Douglas
