Please help us expand our work in the Middle East – by supporting the Three Peaks Challenge
On 16 June our team of dedicated staff, former intern and friend Danielle, Lakshmi, Marta, Irene and Helen will climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours to raise funds to support the work of our charity, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. All proceeds from the donations will support our Middle East work, encouraging companies to respect human rights.
Examples of our Middle East work:
Exposing firms selling surveillance equipment & tear gas to Syria, Libya, Iran, Egypt: We sought responses from 16 firms selling surveillance equipment allegedly used in human rights abuses – 5 US companies, 2 French, 2 German, 2 Italian, 1 each from China, Finland, Ireland, Sweden, UK. 14 firms replied. We drew global attention to the allegations, responses, and the firms that failed to respond. We also sought responses from firms selling tear gas, after reports that its indiscriminate use by security forces injured protesters; some allegedly died of asphyxiation.
Alleged abuses by a French firm in Libya: Our website is tracking a criminal case against Amesys, accused of complicity for providing Gaddafi’s government with surveillance equipment allegedly used to identify political opponents, whom the government detained and tortured.
Your donation will support our work in the region, led by our 2 new Middle East Researchers. Sa’eda Al-Kilani (left), based in Jordan, joined our team in March – see her background here. Our other researcher, Rania Fazah based in Lebanon, started work in April.
You will also help us draw attention to positive steps by companies in the Middle East, e.g. in January 2012 Yahoo!’s Business & Human Rights Program hosted the first “Change Your World!” summit in Cairo, focused on how technology and media can amplify women’s voices and support women’s leadership in human rights, economic empowerment, political leadership and journalism.
Our work often leads to positive change on the ground – click here for 10 case examples of our impact.
To avoid any possible perception of a conflict of interest, the Resource Centre does not accept donations from companies. Donations from individuals are therefore essential for our work to continue.
Many thanks,
Danielle, Lakshmi, Marta & Irene, on behalf of the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre board and staff
