I have chosen to support Alzheimer's Research UK due to the impact the disease has had on my family's life.

 

My Grandmother passed away on the 9th March 2013.

 

She had suffered with Alzheimer's for a number of years. At first the decline was slow, and she was able to be cared for in her own home, but as the disease developed she found coping with everyday life difficult and my disabled Grandfather could no longer look after her. Over the years, the disease tookhold and she no longer recognised her own family members. 

 

Alzheimer's is a horrific disease and with an ever ageing population, it is also one which is likely to become more prevalent in the future. 25 million of the UK population have a close friend or family member with dementia and this figure is likely to increase. This statistic highlights another issue - Alzheimer's affects more than just the person with the disease. Families have to watch as loved ones become shells of their former selves and there is little they can do to help.

 

That is why research into Alzheimer's is so important. Just £20 to ARUK equates to one hour of research, targetted at understanding the disease so that scientists might strive for a cure, or even prevention of the disease in the first place so that in the future those millions of people might not have to suffer the effects of such a terrible and terrifying disease.

 

Though it was difficult to accept, my Grandmother was never going to recover. However, with this highly important research, we can but hope that others in the future will not have to die the way she did.
