I am doing the Great North Run for When You Wish Upon a Star who do great work for children with severe illnesses.
After I had just returned from 6 months in Afghanistan in Dec 2010, 2 days before Christmas, my 12 year old daughter Hannah was diagnosed with cancer after a tumour the size of a small melon was discovered behind her breast bone. Hannah showed immense bravery throughout her period of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and was able to go back to school in Sep 2011. Having missed out on the previous Christmas, she was pleased to have been able to take part in a trip to Lapland in Dec 11 organised by When You Wish Upon a Star. What was going to be a special Christmas was made even more so by the magical trip. In May this year, Hannah was invited to make a speech at the charity’s annual fundraising ball about the trip, something which had not been done before. She put her nerves behind her to tell everyone about her illness and the trip and received a well-deserved standing ovation.
I did a half marathon 10 years ago but am a bit slower now, but looking forward to doing the Great North Run and raising some cash for a superb charity. Thank you.
