Story
Richard's Return
I've been and gone and done it, I'm back safe, if not sound; it was a great experience and new friends I have found.
The stories they were humbling, the bravery was stark; at Eighty Seven, Paul Brouet was still the brightest spark.
At Seventeen he'd led our boys, escaping aircrew all, across the giant Pyrenees, that soaring mountain wall.
His memories were poignant; with sadness in his eyes, he told of friends that he had lost, his grief could not disguise.
The walk this year was gruesome, at thirty nine degrees; they look quite cool but sure are hot, those lofty Pyrenees!
What's worse I had a nasty snag which caused a medevac; I slipped and fell, my knee went 'twang', the leader sent me back.
But not before I'd seen the place where young Barreau was killed, and laid a wreath to pay respect, the horror there still chilled.
At just nineteen he gave his all, so that our men might live; it made me think, in contrast, of how little I now give.
I close with thanks to all of you who gave me your support, and hope that Foster's frailty doesn't cause an anxious thought.
For now the knee is on the mend, my spirits also raising, especially by the total, THANK YOU DONORS - YOU'RE AMAZING!
