Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Thanks,
This page is in memory of our dad, Richard John Horwood, a wonderful, sweet, funny, and clever man who sadly passed away on the 23rd August 2011.
When he was in his early twenties, he was one of the first patients to successfully undergo revolutionary open heart surgery, by famous heart surgeon Sir Donald Ross, to replace his aortic valve. Following another valve replacement in his forties, a subsequent double bypass, and keyhole angioplasty and stent implants, he would often joke about being the bionic man and a wonder of modern medicine.
Dad often volunteered for medical trials in an effort to contribute towards the medical innovations which had kept him going for so long - over 40 years since his first life-saving operation - and he was a lifelong supporter of the British Heart Foundation, for obvious reasons.
In place of flowers at the funeral, we think dad would have appreciated a contribution towards the charity which he always supported. If you would like to do this, you can do so via this page. Of course you’re also welcome to make a private donation to your local British Heart Foundation, if you prefer.
Sadly, dad suffered a major heart attack whilst playing Crown Green bowls; a game which he had become rather good at in the short time he had been playing. He was one point away from winning the match, which would have pleased him immensely.
