Brittany to Bordeaux by bicycle · 3 October 2019

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is the world's leading medical humanitarian aid organisation. We work in over 70 countries - in conflict zones, natural disasters and epidemics. We are independent, neutral and impartial. We provide medical care where it's needed most.

Story

After my last effort to cycling over the Alps in 2016, I thought my days of doing multi day endurance events was over. However the hills on the Atlantic coast of France aren't as frightening as the mountains, so I took the plunge. Total distance is 600km/375 miles. We start in Surrey and ride down to Portsmouth. After a ferry ride we cycle down to Bordeaux.

There may be no big mountains, but we could be caught out by terrible autumn weather and 100 miles a day for three days in France will definitely be a challenge. I'd be very grateful if you could support Médecins Sans Frontières in the amazing work that they do.

Here's what your donation can do:

£10 pays for measles vaccines for 21 children Measles is a highly infectious disease that can be deadly, particularly for children under the age of five.

£15 buys enough RUTF to treat two malnourished children Ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) has revolutionised the treatment of severe malnutrition.

£20 pays for hepatitis B vaccines for 62 people Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening viral infection that attacks the liver.

£30 provides clean linen and gowns for two surgical operations Every operation carried out by an MSF surgeon requires clean linen and gowns to help prevent the spread of infection.

£45 could cover the cost of putting a doctor in the field for a day MSF doctors provide people with medical treatment for a wide range of injuries and illnesses.

£65 buys a foldable stretcher Foldable stretchers are a fast and safe way of getting an injured person away from danger.

£73 could treat up to 130 people with malaria People with the mosquito-transmitted disease can be cured by a three-day course of artemisinin combination therapy.
