Story

My late grandmother, Catherine Isabella White Vogler, was born in Shap, Westmoreland (now Cumbria) in 1902 and immigrated to America with her parents, William White and Isabella Rowlandson White, as an infant in April, 1903. She loved cats and had many throughout her life, her last cat being "Smokey", a gray and white long hair. Catherine passed away in 1982 just a few months shy of her 80th birthday.

Although she lived in parts of the Northeast after coming to America, she settled in Texas at age 14 in 1916 and stayed here for the rest of her life. She kept up correspondence with her aunts back in Cumbria, especially her Aunt Lem (Emily Rowlandson Metcalfe). In a letter written in 1921 Aunt Lem wrote Catherine that her family often thought of her because "when you left Hardendale (for America) and us you were asleep."

In May of 2010 I was able to visit Cumbria and Shap and Hardendale, where I learned about the Eden Animal Rescue. I took a photo of this cat on the slate roof and it reminded me of my grandmother, Catherine, and her love for animals.

In November of 2010 I managed to break my foot, and while enduring a "forced" rest and recuperation, became interested in the famous Coast-to-Coast Walk across Northern England, a 190 mile, 2 week hike from St. Bee's on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea, traveling through 3 National Parks and some of the most amazingly scenic landscape in England.

I have resolved to undertake the Coast-to-Coast Walk in June of 2012 and decided to ask my friends and family to donate to Eden Animal Rescue in memory of my grandmother, Catherine White Vogler and my dog, Boundary, who passed away on March 11, 2011 at 13 1/2 years, and in hopes of making a real difference in the lives of the animals there, many of whom have been abandoned or abused.

None of the money raised goes to me - I'm paying all my expenses. Everything donated goes to Eden Animal Rescue. My goal is to raise 1,000 pounds, or around $1600 with the current exchange rate. Of course if I raise more all the better. Donations can be made via Paypal or credit card and the U.S. dollar amount will convert into British Pounds. You won't get a tax deduction unless you're a UK resident, but you'll have the satisfaction of contributing to a really worthwhile cause.

You don't have to donate right now. It would be great if you could donate while I'm making the walk or after I've completed the entire 190 miles - I'll have a certificate to prove it!

I'll keep you all informed on line and through photos when I tackle the Coast-to-Coast Walk in June of 2012.

Thanks in advance for your support.
