The Big Cardiff Fun Run · 26 September 2009 ·

Scoliosis Association UK and British Scoliosis Research Foundation merged in 2023 and are now known as Scoliosis Support and Research. We promote and fund research into scoliosis and other spinal conditions in the UK, whilst providing support and information to people affected by scoliosis.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We all took part in the  Cardiff BIg Fun Run to raise funds for the Scoliosis Association UK. Richard  then followed up with the Survival of the Fittest 10K race in and out of the water around Cardiff, the following week for the same cause. We are very grateful for all your contributions, support and interest- thanks so much!

Why did we do it?

Scoliosis is a curving and twisting of the spine for which there is corrective treatment but no cure. Scoliosis is, surprisingly, quite common. About three or four children per thousand of the general population will need specialist supervision, and about one child in every thousand will need hospital treatment usually for major corrective surgery with the insertion of a (permanent) metal rod, sometimes followed by a period in a plaster jacket or brace.

Scoliosis can develop at any time during childhood and adolescence. Progressive (worsening) early onset curvatures are potentially serious, and some of these major need surgical treatment. Severe deformity can lead to damaged lung function, or disability in middle age.

The condition affects teenage girls at a much greater rate than boys- for reasons unknown.  Our daughter Bethan has just undergone a major operation to help with the condition- and is doing well. We'd like to give something back in return.

Every little helps!
