Riding the Trod · 18 June 2010

We are an international horse charity that strives to improve the lives of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in the UK and throughout the world. We support the horse-human partnership in all its guises, using care, research, education and influence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are completing a 25 mile research ride from Strata Florida to Abbey Cwmhir on Friday 18th June 2010. The ride will take place along the medieval trackway known as 'The Monks' Trod'. For more information on the ride visit www.ridingthetrod.com and see the Trod Blog at http://ridingthetrod.wordpress.com/

We are asking for sponsorship to be donated to World Horse Welfare (formerly the International League for Protection of Horses). Part of our research is concerned with understanding the imense cultural importance of the human-horse bond in Wales, both today and in the past. The Cistercian monks who built Strata Florida were reputed to have bred horses locally, and their animals would have played an important role in enabling the monks to cross the treacherous bogland (Cors Caron) and the Cambrian mountains which seperated the two abbeys. The Cistercians are also well known for their dedication to the ideal of charity, and so we are attempting to ensure this lives on in the Riding the Trod project!
