Story
The Cahors Challenge is to teams of four to ride in relay over 500 miles from St Malo to Cahors in the Midi region of south western France in three days, raising a minimum of £1000 for charity.
The Challenges have raised just over £2.75 million for worthy causes including around £200,000 in 2010 where the top teams raised nearly £9,000. Can we make it £3,000,000 in 2011 ?
Teams will leave from Portsmouth on the overnight ferry to St Malo on Wednesday 28th September. Starting under the historic walls of this maritime city, they will cycle from Brittany into Normandy and head south over the Loire to spend the first night in the home of pre- Champagne favourite fizz, Saumur. Then, following river valleys that climb into the foothills of the Massif Central, they will spend the second night on the outskirts of the city of Limoges. Riding on south towards the headwaters of the Dordogne on day three, the Challenge finish line is the 14th century medieval bridge over the river Lot at Cahors, home to the “black wine” revered by Tzars, Popes and Princes. Teams will return to Portsmouth from Caen late on Sunday 2nd October.
Teams will be made up of "extra"ordinary people rising to a physical challenge raising money for charities through personal and corporate sponsorship. All that is required is the legs and stamina to ride your share of 500 miles and the commitment to raise a minimum of £1,000 for charity, half of which can be donated to a charity of the team's choice. The team entry fee of £1,260 covers the cost of cross channel ferries, over night cabins and three nights’ half board accommodation. Teams will provide their own support vehicle and typically road racing bikes.
Whilst teams can donate half of what they raise to a charity of their own choice, the remainder will be donated to Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. 100% of the teams’ sponsorship goes to worthy causes.
