In my working life, I see the impact of people, good and bad, on wild animals and, notably, on elephants.
We, people, have allowed up to 36,000 elephants to be killed in a year for their ivory, for no reason other than to create trinkets. Ivory poaching and human-wildlife conflict are costing lives (elephant and human) and, while much has been done to tackle these threats, more work is needed. At the DSWT, orphaned baby elephants who have tragically been separated from their mother and herd at the hands of humans are afforded a second chance at life - without intervention they will die, as has too often been the case for their mothers, killed for their tusks.
These babies often arrive physically scarred. They also bear the emotional trauma of having lost a parent, something i can relate to and they need 24-hour love and support to know they are not alone and, ultimately, to thrive back in the wild when grown.
I will be cycling 100 miles (yes in lycra) on 30th July in the London-Surrey Ride100, with the intention to complete the course, which has a few unpleasant climbs, within 5 hours. It will be a beast of a challenge as finding any time to ride this year has not been easy, but then that's the point, this is intended to be tough and I hope you will help incentivise me to keep my wheels spinning by sponsoring me any amount that you can. I can assure you, all funds raised will be put to exceptionally good use at a field level to protect elephants and their habitats.
Thank you so much.
