Weston Hospicecare provides expert end-of-life care, free of charge, to people with life-limiting illnesses. Our goal is people can live as well as they can, for as long as they can; we help them feel like family and friends again, not just patients and carers.

Story

Day 2

Day one ended at the Travel Lodge in Newbury.  Dinner was McDonalds!

Day two started well.  Slightly slower due to the never ending hills and gale force winds. Honestly!

Stopped at the well named pub Who'd a Thought It for a lunch of sausage and chips.   £15 in donations from the landlady and customers.  Thanks very much guys.

Met up with technical support in Chippenham, loaded up on Percy Pigs and set off again.

19.30 - disaster - Luke's chain snapped about 7k from planned destination.  Pick up by Daniel and taken to Jay's Guest House in Bristol.

Feast time.  Pizza as a starter, steak (Rob) another pizza (Luke)!   Rob still has a hole which needs filling, chips and pitta to the rescue.

Day 3

Full english breakfast at the guest house.   Now on route to Halfords to fix Luke's bike.

2nd October 2009

A nutritious pre-departure meal of Kebab and chips was had on Thursday evening ready for a 06.00 start from Cheshunt.

08.00 – Marble Arch – London – feeling good, but hungry!

09.30 – A breakfast of jumbo sausage from a burger van by Heathrow

On January 17th 2009 David Chillingworth, my Dad and Luke's uncle, sadly passed away.  My Dad's last few weeks were spent at Weston Hospicecare.

The level of care my Dad received at Weston Hospicecare was outstanding.  I can only describe the nurses and staff as Living Angels.

In memory of my Dad, and as a small gesture to express eternal thanks to everyone at Weston Hospicecare for the support and care they provided my Dad, Luke and I will be attempting to raise funds for the hospice by cycling from David's family home in Cheshunt to Weston Hospicecare, approx 200 miles, on the weekend of Friday 2nd October.

Anyone who knows Luke and I is aware we are not built for endurance cycling and Lycra is not the most flattering of clothing for us.   The training started a few weeks ago when we both completed the London to Southend Bike Ride and the diet is starting (again) tomorrow.

Weston Hospicecare is a hospice situated in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. The Hospice cares for anyone who has a life-threatening illness .

Below are approximate costs of some of tasks and activities

One electronic bed with a pneumatic mattress which together provides much improved comfort cost £4,500.
A week's episode in the In-Patient Unit involving the Clinical Team and with all the support costs is some £2,500.
To sustain a Community Palliative Nurse working alongside primary care colleagues costs some £900 per week.
A therapeutic day in the Time 4 U clinic costs £80 per person.
It costs £60 per patient per day to receive care and support in Day Hospice.

The annual running costs for Weston Hospicecare are around £2.4 million. The NHS contribution is around 20%.   The continued work of Weston Hospicecare is heavily dependent on charitable donations.

Please Note:  A comprehensive list and review of all Kebab shops visited over the weekend will be provided!
