Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Hi, i'm Rob Beckingham & most of you know me or have seen me about over the years, I am now a Supplier Production Manager for CarillionTelent, but have had a few other post. I have been on my own cancer journey for the past 4 years, I was initially diagnosed with Bowel cancer in 2012. This required major abdominal surgery and having to have a ileostomy (stoma) until it was reversed a year later.
Within 7-8 weeks after the initial bowel cancer surgery I started chemotherapy for the next 6 months. Psychologically I did not want to belong to this 'Cancer Club' and struggled mentally with the effects of chemotherapy & the having a stoma bag, and physically with having to deal with the side effects of the chemotherapy - Macmillan Nurses supported me through these adversities, just knowing someone was always at the end of a phone or in a clinic if required, was always reassuring.
I recovered and remained well, having my stoma reversed. I had CTscans every 3 months to keep a check on me & unfortunately, throughout 2013 scans showed first one and then an increasing number of nodules in both my lungs - a spread of my Bowel cancer to my lungs.
Into battle again...... and now referred to a lung surgeon, who advised the surgery required was highly specialised & a referral to Mr George Ladas at The Royal Brompton Hospital, London. Mr Ladas advised he felt surgery could remove the 7 tumours to my left and right lungs in a two-stage surgery, but I would require me to have another course of Chemotherapy, to shrink the tumours prior to surgery. I completed the 2nd Course of chemotherapy in September 2014 - it was more difficult than the first and then had the first surgery to remove a lobe of my left lung in October 2014 followed by surgery to the right lung 6 weeks later in December 2014. I rehabiluitated with regular walking and cycling to build up my exercise tolerance and stamina.
Again, I was reguarly monitored 3 monthly with CT scans and I remained rudely well until November 2015, when another nodule was discovered in my left lung. I returned to Mr Ladas at The Royal Brompton on 2nd March 2016 and was into surgery on 3rd March 2016 to have the upper lobe of my left lung removed..
I am currently undergoing my 3rd course of chemotherapy, post surgery and need to demonstarte my 'Thanks' - such an inadequete word - to Macmillan Nurses, all NHs Doctors, Nurses and all involved in my care so far.
I'm planning to participate in the 'Telent Challenge 1100 Cycle ride' is my attempt and personal challenge to help raise funds for Macillan Cancer Care so they can continue to offer advice support and care to all those in need of their care. None of us ever know when we or our loved ones, family or friends may be in need of their help.........none of us would ever want to be 'in the Club' but may find ourselves there regardless!
Please support me in raising much needed funds by donating to my 'Just Giving Page' - I will be half way through my current course of chemotherapy (6th treatment) when on 23rd July 2016 I will cycle 11K Gravesend to Tilbury in Kent.
Please help me to stand up to Cancer and fight back to help all who have to deal with this disease
