Dance Britain for Burma - Cardiff/Newport dance marathon · 29 September 2012 ·

LearnBurma is an educational charity dedicated to opening the eyes of a new generation to the situation in Burma, equipping young people with the skills and motivation to make a real difference to it.

Story

I am going to be dancing, yes dancing, my way around 26.2 miles to help raise awareness and support for Burma.  Since 1962, Burma has been ruled by a military dictatorship that suppressed all opposition and wielded absolute power, despite international condemnation and sanctions.  The generals who ruled Burma stood accused of gross human rights abuses, including forcible relocation of civilians and the widespread use of forced labour, including children.  The use of child soldiers to support the military has been widely reported.  As a result of this, as well as decades of economic mismanagement, stagnation, and widespread corruption, Burma is extremely poor, ranked 149 out of 181 countries on the United Nations human development index.  There are severe limitations to literacy, standards of living, child welfare, health care, and education.  However, there are signs of hope.  Aung San Suu Kyi, one of the foremost leaders of democracy, has been released from years of house arrest, and elections have been held.  Recent visits to Burma by international leaders, including David Cameron and Hilary Clinton, have encouraged international sanctions to be eased.  The political pressure must be maintained, though, to insure that changes are for real and not just for the benefit of the military elite.

By sponsoring me, you will be helping to support education, development, democracy, human rights, and real change in Burma. Many thanks for your support!
