Dear Friends and Colleagues
I am seeking your sponsorship for my climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your money will go to Mvumi School Trust that funds DCT Mvumi Secondary School in Tanzania. I am dedicating my trek to my brave grandson, Archie, who has had a brain tumour successfully removed at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. By token of this I will also give £1,000 of my own money to associated children’s charities (as chosen by Archie and my daughter Emma) that are helping with his ongoing treatment.
I am the treasurer and a trustee of Mvumi School Trust, a British based charity that has helped fund the construction and subsequent operation of Anglican Diocese of Tanganyika’s (DCT) Mvumi Secondary School in Tanzania.
Mvumi is in a poor rural area, a 50 minute bumpy ride from Dodoma the capital of Tanzania. Many of the boys and girls come from poor rural families and are faced with many hours of walking to get to school. It was this that leads us to provide hostel accommodation in the school and village.
The school has grown considerably (now over 500 students) and has a flourishing Fifth and Sixth Form, with our high school graduates now attending local universities and medical schools.
Recently we have agreed with the Ministry of Education to take in up to 50 blind and visually impaired boys and girls and have set up a special resource unit to cater for their needs. Visually impaired students are educated alongside their fully sighted peers and we aspire to become a national centre of excellence for the integrated education of the visually impaired. The Trust funds the entire education of over 150 of the poorer students including all those who are visually impaired.
We have one European in Africa looking after the finances. All other staff are Tanzanians. Mvumi is a school for African boys and girls who are taught by Africans. All they need is a helping hand from you.
By the way, unlike some bigger charities, our administration costs are minimal so every £ that you give will be used by the school. I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your support.
Thank you, the Bridge Clinic Maidenhead, for sponsoring my exercise ECG and daughter, Dr Kirsty, who has been training me and will accompany the Old Man on Mount Kilimanjaro (her 9th ascent).
So please dig deep and donate now.
