I did it! Well actually, "we" did it. Running with sister-in-law Carol (and 24,998 others) the 10K distance was completed in 1hr 6min 9 sec, a time that gave us both great satisfaction. The weather was kind; sunny but not unbearably hot and the support throughout the course was fantastic. After the run we all (the Epilepsy Bereaved runners and supporters) met up at the bandstand in St James' Park where the charity's director Jane Hanna OBE and other trustees greeted us and offered welcome drinks and refreshments. My heartfelt thanks to all supporters and donors. You have been fabulous and your generocity certainly helped keep me going through the cold dark days of training. In answer to two much asked questions; "no", I will not be attempting the marathon but "yes" I do intend to run the London 10K again next year though I will not be seeking a repeat of the fund raising effort.
My original page entry follows:
On 11 July 2010, just 3 months short of my 65 birthday, I will be participating in the 10K run. I am not a natural distance runner and have never attempted anything of this nature before. I am having to work pretty hard at getting my body ready for the task.
I will be raising funds for Epilepsy Bereaved (EB) with whom I have a close association. The charity was there for Sandie and me when we lost our beautiful Becky to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) in May 2004. In October 2009 I was appointed to the charity’s Board of Trustees. EB is a very small charity that provides bereavement counselling to those who have lost family members to epilepsy and also promotes/funds research into SUDEP. It relies almost entirely on donations to fund its activities.
The 10K race starts at Hyde Park Corner and proceeds along the Embankment to the . The Embankment is then retraced as far as over which the runners reach the south bank of the . The bridge is then re-crossed, followed by a circuit of from where the ‘oh so welcome’ finish line is reached in . Becky's aunty, Carol Staff, will be my "running buddy" during the race and is, herself training hard.
Your generosity will be so, so appreciated. Every pound counts. Please, please sponsor me and, if applicable, tick the Gift Aid box as that adds considerably to the value of your donation without costing you anything extra.
