Virgin London Marathon 2010 · 25 April 2010 ·

The Dockland Settlements has been supporting vulnerable, lonely or disadvantaged people since 1894. Currently we run three community centres, two pre and after-school playcare services and a food bank. We support our local communities but our focus is on the most vulnerable & isolated.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have been accepted by Dockland Settlements to be one of their runners for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon. Many people would say this is probably the gratest running event in the world with over 30,000 runners and about 1 million spectators. This will be my 4th full Marathon after completing 3 in 2009, Edinburgh, Robin Hood and The Greensands Marathons.

I chose to run for the Dockland Settlements (and they chose me) as they are a local charity in the area that I live. I also do about 90% of my training through the Docklands. These guys do a great job in supporting the local community by running events such as parent & toddler groups, parenting courses, scout & cub packs, Tae Kwon Do, aerobics, ballroom & rock ‘n’ roll dancing, singing & music classes and a pensioners’ club.

Most people these days associate the Docklands area with Canary Wharf and the Banking industry. What most people don't realise is that in the shadow of Londons tallest buildings there are many people struggling while the fat cats keep paying themselves their bonuses. The Dockland Settlements help these people by provididng a range of activities to help a wide selection of age groups in the community.

Luckily the run goes very close to our house on two occasions, about the 14mile and 22 mile marks. For anyone in London on the day, I would love as much support as possible as I run past home and when I finally hobble back with the medal around my neck to share a few celebratory drinks. No doubt Cally will put on a good spread once you see me race past and await my return.

For those that are interested, I will soon be uploading my training program which starts early January. I will keep you informed of my progress as well as details of some fundraising I am considering in the New Year. Bets will be taken closer to the time of my anticipated completion time. I have a very ambitious time in mind but with the right training and good conditions, I think it is possible.
