ECRAD is a Scottish Charity which works together with ECRAD Malawi to drive forward a programme of improvements to alleviate the suffering and deprivation brought about by the HIV/Aids virus which has badly hit this already impoverished nation. Since HIV was discovered in the early 1980’s the majority of those dying are young adults with young families. It is estimated that there are more than 1 million orphans in Malawi. The orphan children in the villages have insufficient food and care, resulting in high mortality rate. ECRAD aims to serve such “victims of society” by providing basic needs for orphans. ECRAD funds the daily feeding programme of one nutritious meal for 120 orphans who are joined by the 32 orphans from the secondary school during the school holidays at the Zioya Orphan Centre, Ntcheu, Malawi.

In March 2010 Tropical storms damaged several buildings.  Corrugated roofing was blown off and, in some cases, brickwork collapsed. Rain damaged school books and bulk food stored in building. A girl orphan aged 9 was struck by debris and died, 7 others were injured and taken to the Ntcheu hospital about 10 miles away on a rough road.  4 adults were also injured and taken to hospital. The Scottish Ecrad Board have advanced funds to help them purchase food and materials but much more is required to fix the situation.  About 10 buildings including toilets, kitchen and sun shade structures have been damaged or destroyed.
