Story
At Ronald McDonald House Oxford we provide support to families while their children are in the Oxford Children’s Hospital and ensure they have somewhere to stay close to their child and available without cost. This means that there is one less thing to worry about and parents can concentrate on their child’s care.
As well as providing accommodation for our families an important part of our role is to provide emotional support during their stay with us, offering practical advice, signposting to other organisations or to just be a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on.
The House has 18 en-suite bedrooms, two kitchens, a laundry room and communal lounges. Since we opened in January 2007 the House has been full to bursting with mums, dads and other family members of critically ill children. In total so far we have accommodated over 4,000 families, and their stays range from just a couple of days to many months.
The children have varied conditions, many have come in for craniofacial surgery, heart surgery, some need neuro-surgery and many are in hospital as a result of serious accidents.
The development of the House was fully funded by RMHC – Ronald McDonald House Charities, however, together with the Ronald McDonald House Oxford management board we are responsible for raising the annual on-going running costs of £250,000. All the money donated to us goes directly into improving the service and facilities that we provide for our families.
