BRAC was founded in Bangladesh in 1972 by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, and today is a global leader in developing cost-effective, evidence-based poverty innovations in extremely poor, conflict-prone and post-disaster settings.

Story

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As some of you might already know, I have been selected to participate in a volunteer programme in Bangladesh for a few weeks at the end of the year/start of next.

The programme is called Porishōd (which means ‘the act of giving back’ in Bengali) and is organised by BRAC UK working in partnership with BRAC Bangladesh, VSO UK and the UK Department for International Development.

The programme provides committed British Bangladeshi professionals with an opportunity to offer their skills to the development of Bangladesh through structured placements in-country and a platform for raising awareness about development issues upon their return.

Some information about BRAC

BRAC is a Bangladesh based international development organisation that was founded in 1972.  Over the years, BRAC has established itself as a pioneer in recognising and tackling the different dimensions of poverty. BRAC’s unique, holistic approach to poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor encompasses a range of core programmes in economic and social development, health, education, and human rights and legal services. Today, BRAC is the largest southern NGO and employs more than 100,000 people, the majority of which are women, and reaches more than 110 million people with its development interventions in Asia and Africa.  In Bangladesh alone, BRAC works to combat poverty in 70,000 villages and 2000 slums, and reaches three quarters of the entire population with an integrated package of services for rural and urban communities.

BRAC UK is a London-based international development organisation and member of the expanding BRAC International.  BRAC UK’s main areas of focus are: adaptation of the successful BRAC approach and models for programme implementation among diaspora communities in the UK, advocacy for development led by the south and fund raising for BRAC programmes in Africa and Asia.

How can you help?
