Some of you will remember that I took part in sponsored walks in London in 2006, 2007 and 2008 in aid of the Myasthenia Gravis Association. Thanks to your generosity I have raised about £1500 in total. Now that my condition has improved I am planning a more ambitious walk this year, a 7 mile walk along the Malverns, climbing the summits of  the Worcestershire Beacon, North Hill and British Camp along the way. I will not be alone: my wonderful dog Harvey will be accompanying me all the way and keeping me amused with his antics, and I hope that friends and family can join me. As you know MG is a relatively unknown disease affecting a significant number of people of all ages all over the world. It is an auto-immune disease by which the body’s natural defences interfere with the brain’s messages to the muscles. This results in varying degrees of disability, and without treatment would be fatal. In many cases quality of life is compromised, whether from the disease itself or from the drugs, mainly steroids, used to treat it. The MGA receives no government support, and exists to promote the welfare of sufferers in this country. Charitable donations collected are used in 4 ways: to raise awareness of the condition in the medical community to speed up diagnosis and improve treatment; to raise awareness and understanding in society at large; to fund the training of specialized nurses; to fund research into more efficient drugs producing less damaging side-effects. Please be generous in your sponsorship: theMalvern Hills are not the same as a walk in the park, and even a short walk requires a fair bit of effort! The distances are not great but the gradients make for slow progress! Please remember to tick the box if you are a tax-payer as this increases the value of the donation.
