My story

As most of you will know, I'm not a natural born runner. The furthest I've ever run is 10k, and that only happened once. So you can imagine my joy when I got back to work after a couple of days off to hear that a friend had volunteered us for the Bath Half marathon. I'm pretty sure my initial reaction was just to laugh out loud.

I mentioned it to my family who looked a bit concerned, laughed nervously and said things like "a half marathon is quite a long way, you know.." But speaking to my Consultant at the RUH in Bath, who had been the person recruiting in the first place, I discovered that he was one of the trustees for a charity called Trust PA who have a number of places in the half marathon every year.

Trust PA is a charity set up in the memory of Paul-André Blundell (known to his friends as PA). In September 2001, keen sportsman Paul-André sustained a serious neck injury during a rugby tackle, leaving him totally paralysed from the chin down and only able to breathe using a ventilator. He was making excellent progress over the following months in a spinal rehabilitation unit when he tragically passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). He was just 26 years old. While Paul-André was in hospital, friends and colleagues started to raise money for his ongoing care. Trust PA continues to raise funds in his memory to help other spinal cord injured (SCI) people.

And so I ventured out onto the winter streets of Bath and went for my first jog in 3 months. And it was HORRIFIC. Only 1 day to go now, and I'm very afraid. However, it's for a great cause, and I'd be really grateful for your support.  Don't just take my word for it, please have a look at the Trust PA charity website at www.trustpa.org and see for yourself.

No amount is too small, and if you fancy coming down to watch a rather sweaty, wheezy me trundling around for a few hours just for a laugh, or to throw stuff at me, you'd be most welcome as well.

Thanks everyone. See you on the other side...

Trust PA was set up in memory of Paul-Andre Blundell (PA), who spent five months paralysed before he died. He had hoped to benefit from recent scientific advances.
