Story
It is everyone's fear to lose a loved one or close friend at any time and in November 2016 that is exactly what happened. My close friend and awesome colleague Steve Holbrook was tragically taken from us having battled so bravely against a violent and incurable Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade IV brain tumour.
Having being diagnosed in March 2015, Steve overcame brain surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but in early 2016 he received the devastating news that the tumour had returned. On 30th November 2016 aged just 37 years of age Steve sadly passed away leaving a massive hole in the lives of those he left behind including his amazing wife Carrie and 2 young children, Emma and Mason.
In 2013, Steve and I ran the Paris Marathon together and on our return, I suggested that we run between London and Paris as our ‘next challenge’. Steve was totally against this initially but unbelievably once diagnosed with his tumour he began coming around to the idea, particularly as we would have a goal to raise as much money and awareness of brain tumours given how woefully underfunded this illness is despite it being the biggest cancer killer in the under 40’s yet only receives 1% of national cancer funding – Shocking hey!!
Before he passed, I vowed to Steve that I would do all I can to help his family and friends carry on his inspirational work and continue with the fight against such a devastating illness and who knows, one day all of the hard work and extra funding may help prolong lives and maybe even find a cure. That is why I am taking on this challenge. I am going to run from the Eiffel Tower to Bucking Palace over 8 days beginning on February 24th 2019, the day Steve should be celebrating his 40th Birthday. There will be blood, sweat and no doubt lots of tears as I take on this challenge but I know for a fact that Steve will be with me every single step of the way!
Please help me to carry on Steve’s legacy by helping us fund the fight against this illness and allow Steve’s young children to see what an inspirational man their Daddy truly is!
All my love
Ross
