DUQC 24 Hour Basketball Match · 29 May 2016

Established in 1981, the Newman Holiday Trust began by running a one week summer holiday for children with special needs. The Trust now provides holidays for about 130 children with special needs aged four to sixteen each year, in various locations around the UK. Due to the high level of skilled care they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would not otherwise receive a holiday. The holidays provide a range of fun activities in a safe and supportive environment and use a care ration of one helper to one child at all times. The Trust is an entirely voluntary organization and owes its success to over 200 people who dedicate their free time to helping these children. This voluntary structure ensures that every penny raised goes directly towards a child's holiday.

Story

Hi there, I'm Ross,
A bit about me, I'm currently at Newcastle/Durham university and my main sport is hockey but I'm no real athlete and I'm definitely not physically fit (going up the stairs can make me short of breath). I've only played basketball a few times at school and a few times at uni so I'm hardly what you would call a basketball pro.

However I have decided to take part, along with 25 others, in a 24 hour charity basketball match for a charity called The Newman Holiday Trust. They provide holidays for children with special needs.
Why can't these children just go on holiday you ask?
Each child the Newman Holiday Trust takes on holiday is no easy case, due to the differing needs of each individual child. It requires taking not just the child but also their entire care package, involving taking their specific carers, specialist equipment and also delivering their vital medication. The holidays also give the parents an opportunity for a well earned break, and an opportunity for them to have time to relax and engage in some of the activities they would otherwise be unable to.

Whilst run by volunteers, they still need funding in order to pay for all the other aspects of the holidays and so I have chosen to support the charity along with my fellow team mates in the hopes that we can help send a few extra deserving children this year. You don't have to donate, just sharing this with a few friends would help to raise awareness, but all donations are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading this and thanks in advance for any donations you make. You can be assured that even your smallest donation will be helping make a deserving child smile :)
