The Story

After many weeks of thinking we had a malnourished baby, William's heart finally crashed on the 30th January 2012, on the 31st January he was blue-lighted to Evelina Children's hospital and after an echocardiogram we were told that he had heart failure and because of the type of congenital failure (noncompaction cardiomyopathy) his heart was unlikely to repair.

William was sent down to PICU where he was intubated and many clever people started working on him. After some 8 or 9 days William left the intensive care unit and went back up to the cardiac unit, Camel, on Savannah ward. A week or so later William moved to our local hospital for a day or two before coming home with us on a cocktail of drugs designed to keep his heart running as well as possible.

Unfortunately, the drugs are not working as well as we all hoped and William is back in Evelina (mid March) trying out a new set of drugs.

I can't begin to describe how the last couple of months have been for us all, initially the family was split up and living apart as Sharron and I took turns staying in London. Emily has been pushed from pillar to post but is still smiling, mostly. We've been given great support from our families, who are also struggling to come to terms with William's news.

But through it all (is that part of an awful song?) we have been able to rely on the most professional, caring bunch of people we have ever come across. Both Medical and Nursing staff have looked after William (and us) in the most sensitive fashion, been honest with us and goodness knows we need that, put up with us (me) and generally gone way beyond the call of duty.

I'm going to try to give a little back by running about slowly behind hordes of other runners and begging you very generous people for a quid or two. I'm not sure what we can get with two thousand pounds but maybe we can replace the pull down bed that my fat backside is bound to break. I've booked up for a half marathon in August and plan to do it in under two hours - some chance I hear you say. Well, put your money where your mouth is - naturally, you won't get it back if I take longer than two hours.

For those of you who can't wait that long to see me suffer you can donate immediately or sponsor me on the odd 10K or paltry 5K races that I'll no doubt do before August.

I’ll be posting my training ups and downs on twitter @RunCotchRun if you are interested.
