I am running the Great East Run, Peterborough Half Marathon on October 11th 2009 to raise money for Headlines - the Craniofacial Support Group and raise awareness of Craniosynostosis.
Headlines provide vital support and counselling for families of children who suffer from craniofacial related syndromes such as Craniosynostosis.
Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the sutures between the plates in the skull fuse too early causing restricted skull and brain growth. This leads to an abnormal shaped head and in severe cases can result in brain damage.
The only cure is surgery involving a neurosurgeon, craniofacial surgeon and a plastic surgeon taking between 6-8 hours.
Josh, whose mum and dad are family friends, is 2 years old. He was diagnosd with Sagittal Craniosynostosis when he was just 8 weeks old. He underwent surgery at Birmingham Childrens Hospital in October 2007, when he was only 6 months old.
He has now been diagnosed with Metopic Craniosynostosis and requires further surgery.
Craniosynostosis occurs roughly in 1 in 2000 births.
Headlines provide invaluable help and support to families during incredibly stressful and emotional times.
The video link shows what Josh and his family went through with the 1st operation.....Josh now needs a 2nd operation.
