FARM-Africa works at a grassroots level with rural communities in eastern Africa, providing long term solutions to poverty. By working with farmers and herders to introduce new and innovative ways to increase food production and manage natural resources, we aim to improve their food security in a sustainable way. We are reliant on voluntary donations to carry out our work.

At the end of November I am running in a race called the ‘Ethiopia 10K’ to raise money for the highly effective charity FARM-Africa. This is a 10 kilometre race around Addis Ababa. You may have sponsored me before for FARM-Africa when I ran London Marathons. I am no longer doing a marathon distance as I have two problems: Firstly, I now have an artificial hip and secondly, the race is at an altitude of 7,500 feet. The reason why I want to run this race is because I have always hoped to see the work of FARM-Africa in the field and for the first time for many years, the charity is allowing a small group of supporters to do this. Each runner-supporter must raise sponsorship funds that go straight to FARM-Africa, hence this request. We will be personally paying absolutely all our expenses so you can be sure that all funds raised will go to FARM-Africa. The race will be run one day after arrival in Ethiopia and then there is a long trip South to where the important work is being done.

FARM-Africa is a pretty small charity which trains local farmers in Ethiopia, southern Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and then provides them with the means to benefit from the training. It might involve seeds, tools, or an original solution like crossing local goats with Toggenburgs to produce a dairy animal which will survive desert conditions. Please see www.farmafrica.org.uk for a fuller description. The charity doesn’t waste money. Dedicated specialists give people the chance to affect their future in marginal areas of Africa.
