Having been born in Kenya, running has always been part of my heritage. It has always been my underlying ambition to run the London marathon having seen so many fellow Kenyans win this illustrious event and also since I now live in London. As I have no previous marathon experience, I will be just glad to get to the finishing line and it being the Olympic year; will make it even more special.

To realise my ambition, I am privileged to be running for the NeuroMuscular Centre in Winsford, Cheshire. I was made aware of NMC by my brother-in-law, Sanjay Vaja. Sanjay has been suffering from a strain of muscular dystrophy for the last 12years and often talks about how important the NMC is to him.

Sanjay’s story

First of all, anyone who volunteers to run a marathon needs their head examining. I don’t get why anyone would WANT to do it… but then again, Rupesh is always up for a challenge, and Kenyans are pretty amazing runners…. AND he’s running for charity… for the NMC… so I’ll let him off on this occasion.

Many people have heard about muscular dystrophy affecting young boys, but there are many types that only affect adults – which is what happened with me. Growing up I was fine, but whilst at uni I noticed I was getting weaker. For the next 12 years I got weaker and weaker and then finally had to move to a wheelchair. All this time, I was attending NMC for physiotherapy. If it wasn’t for NMC I’d have been in a wheelchair a lot sooner and I’m just amazed at the difference, the new lease of life that the chair has given me. The transition to a chair is a difficult time for anyone and the support, friendship and love that NMC offered was just amazing – no other word for it.

NMC provide physio and hydrotherapy, support for MD patients as well as carers, employment and training opportunities too. People say ‘can’t you get the physio through NHS?’ – In short – no. The reason NMC is a charity is because the NHS does not treat long term / ongoing patients and places like the NMC are the only available option apart from going privately. All that considered, it’s amazing that NMC is the only one of its type in Europe! I feel so lucky that NMC is so close by and that I can attend every week for physio and hydrotherapy sessions.

NMC is doing amazing work so please dig deep to sponsor my crazy brother-in-law as he fulfils one of his lifetime dreams…

I recently took part in the Bromley 10K race on 15/01/2012 held at Norman Park as part of my training. It was quite exciting for me. Check out my pics.
