My mum passed away earlier this year from Dementia, having suffered with it for approximately 7 years. It is a very difficult disease and it affects everyone differently. Dementia is characterised by a decline of the brain and its abilities, causing effects such as memory loss, personality changes and gradually the inability to do things for themselves.

Improving our understanding of dementia is of vital importance: both to guide the search for effective treatment and to develop care that improves the quality of life for those with the condition.

Your donation towards my personal target of £300 will be included as part of the University of Nottingham's Life Cycle 5 campaign to raise £350,000. This money will enable the University to apply world-leading expertise in MRI scanning to the study of dementia and other degenerative conditions of the brain. A new leading-edge MRI scanner will be installed at the Queen's Medical Centre, which is thousands of times more sensitive than standard scanners. This technology will enable research in to ways of diagnosing dementia earlier and improving its treatment.
