Rutland Night Sail 2013

Last year the RNLI rescued 7,912 people, an average of 660 per month.  To recognise this the student sailors of Stamford and Oakham Schools, along with friends from Uppingham School and Rutland Sailing Club Junior & Youth are challenged to transport 660 people around an approximately 1 mile course on Rutland Water over the night of 15 June, to raise funds for the RNLI.

Each School will sail the course using a Wanderer dinghy which can carry up to 4 people, and the number of people transported each lap will be counted. The School which completes the transport of 330 people around the course first will be deemed to have won the Challenge, but the challenge will not be complete until a total of 660 have been carried around the course.  (This will require 83 laps if there are four persons in the boat every lap, and correspondingly more laps if the boat has fewer occupants – no more than 4 will be allowed in a boat).

Boats will be able to make a "pit stop" at the completion of each lap to change one or more of the crew members. Schools will need to plan so that there are people to take over their Wanderer at frequent intervals throughout the event. 

Each team will also be able to accompany their 'flagship' Wanderer with a flotilla of many RS Teras, Fevas, Fireflies, Toppers, Lasers, 29ers etc as they wish, subject to weather and visibility, in order to encourage their team and, of course, to have FUN.
