Story

Heavy rain in since 28th July has led to flash flooding in many parts of the country.

In many areas this led to flash floods which have devastated lives, homes and livestock in these regions.  Latest estimates suggest 1,200 people have lost their lives, while many millions have been affected.  The United Nations estimate that 15 to 20 million people are currently in need of food, shelter and emergency care with needs expected to grow.

The floods have been described as the worst disaster that the country has ever seen and as well as the deaths and injuries have caused major damage to housing, roads, bridges and general infrastructure.

The Salvation Army are well established in the area and has been working in since 1883. The Salvation Army previously responded quickly and effectively to the Earthquake that struck in October 2005. In the North West Frontier, one of the areas that has again been affected, The Salvation Army were able to ensure that tents and supplies reached even the most needy families in remote areas.

We need your help to provide assistance to those affected.

Salvation Army Officers are aware of at least 3,000 families in the areas of , Charsada, Noshera, Jhanghira, Tar Nab and Rasalpur who are in need of food, cooking utensils and bedding. Captain Washington Daniel, regional leader for The Salvation Army in , reports that

"The present situation in all the areas is hopeless and people are facing major difficulties. Most of people have had houses badly damaged or destroyed due to the flood water. The river water came into their houses rising about 6-to 10 feet - all of their possessions have now been lost or damaged. All the walls and roofs are affected badly and people are looking for shelter elsewhere, going to their relative's houses or to nearby church buildings in hope of finding somewhere to sleep."

The team have visited many different areas, including schools, which have all faced similar devastation. In some areas it is still too difficult to enter as the water has not yet subsided. They have also reported human and animal bodies still trapped in the mud. People in many of these areas are feeling quite hopeless and cut off and are in desperate need of support.

The Salvation Army is responding to the situation and to the needs of the people but we also need your help to provide the necessary equipment and supplies.
