SGPM SAILING FOR STROKE ASSOCIATION · 19 June 2010

Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the leading charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

Hello and thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Together with a few friends I have decided to raise money for THE STROKE ASSOCIATION by entering one of the world largest yacht races, The Round the Island Race on the 19th June 2010.

This is a one day event with up to 1800 yachts racing the 60 mile course around the Isle of Wight. In truth its more casual than competative, that said a 60 mile circular course under sail can delivery many challenges, not least of which is simply to complete.

I have chosen THE STROKE ASSOCIATION because I have first hand experience of how devastating strokes can be. Three people in my family alone have suffered strokes and each year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK alone have a stroke. Of all people who suffer from a stroke about a third are likely to die within the first ten days, making stroke the third biggest killer in the UK.

A quater of a million people are living with long term disability as a direct result of stroke, yet 40% of all strokes could be prevented through simple lifestyle changes such as excercise, healthy eating, regular blood pressure checks, stopping smoking and cutting down on drinking.

The Stroke Association is the only UK charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages.

Stroke is hugely under funded and is dependant on the support of individuals like us to raise money desperatley needed to fund the work. Our efforts will make a real difference so please dig deep and donate now.

Thank you for reading, and for your support.
