A
hospital consultant, two nurses and a medical co-ordinator are planning a
two-hour sponsored swim and dancethon in aid of the HEART UK family
support centre at Sandwell Hospital, West Bromwich.
The
pioneering centre provides outreach, information and testing facilities for
people who are genetically disposed to heart disease through high cholesterol.
“Around
10,000 people in the West Midlands are believed to be affected – yet nine out
of 10 don’t know they are at risk of premature death”
Since
this is a genetic disorder it affects all ages including children and without
detection and treatment the onset of heart disease and stroke occurs often in
an individual from their early thirties and in some families even earlier.
The
swim/dancethon is taking place at Wednesbury Leisure Centre, High Bullen,
Wednesbury, at 10am on November 7. Dr Hughes will be swimming for
two hours- 150 lengths (approximately two and half miles) Nurses
Suzanne Sumara and Carol Verow, and co-ordinator Ruth Lambley-Burke will each
dance for two hours
The
cholesterol support facility, located at the hospital’s medical research unit,
offers free cascade cholesterol testing and advice for families and
individuals. Help and advice can be obtained by contacting 0121 507
3275 or 07814 547754.
