Story
Alongside my Cousins, Katie and Tim, I am running The Great North Run, the world’s largest and greatest half marathon, for Breast Cancer Care.
Shortly after agreeing to walk the London Playtex Moon Walk, a midnight marathon, after being inspired by her best friend’s battle of Breast Cancer, my mum was diagnosed with the same disease. She was determined to continue with her challenge knowing that she would be participating whilst receiving chemotherapy followed by daily radiotherapy. Doctors advised her that she would only be able to manage six miles, but Mum showed incredible strength and positivity and completed the full 26.2 miles and raised over £2000 for patients who were in the same situation. Inconveniently to other walkers, she did collapse on the finish line! 2 years later, we found out that Mum was carrying the Breast Cancer gene, resulting in 12 hours of major surgery in the hope that her journey will soon come to an end.
I feel more often I am hearing about family and friends who either have or know someone who is battling cancer and it was the fantastic care that my mum has received over the 4 years that really helped us as a family and motivated mum through each day.
Having moved to York with a new job and a new step in my life, I want a new personal challenge but also to help to give back and provide the best support and care for future breast cancer patients.
Mum’s strength during her years of treatment really showed me that anything is possible and that true friends and family really do stick together and support each other through the highs and lows. I would like to thank Breast Cancer Care and all the volunteers, nurses, doctors and surgeons for all their support through these difficult years as well as to all of mum’s visitors and new friends she has made along the way.
As a team the three of us are training and fundraising together and we are hoping for some really good times considering its 6 months away. And with some good times, we are hoping for some fantastic support in return from you guys.
I really would appreciate your support, big or small, that will contribute and help towards so many lives that have been affected by Breast Cancer. 1 in 8 women in the UK will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in a life time. In the time that you will have read this and donated, one more person will have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer, so please, show your support and make a positive impact on these people’s life changing stories.
