Steps is the leading charity working for all those whose lives are affected by childhood lower limb conditions. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting individuals, families and carers affected by conditions which have an impact on the legs, hips or feet.

Story

For those of you who know my Mummy and Daddy, they may have already told you how brave they think I am.

Mummy and Daddy had noticed a problem with my feet, not crawling properly and me not being able to walk and were advised that I just had stiff hips. After them asking again and again about my hips, just after my 1st birthday, my lovely doctor sent me for an x-ray and told me that I had two dislocated hips and a life changing condition called DDH (Developmental Dysplasia of the Hips). I am really glad they didn't take no for an answer!! All I knew was that I couldn't walk properly. Mummy and Daddy took me to the hospital where I had to have the first of two big operations, where the doctors had to break my femur in order to build a new hip using bolts and plates and put it back in place (I was in surgery for over 3.5 hours each time!). When I woke up, I was wearing a big body cast called a hip spica - it was pink and went from my chest to my ankle!! Five weeks later I had the same operation on my other hip and I got used to a new cast but luckily it was still pink.

After three months, my cast came off (it was very noisy and I was scared). It was all a bit strange but now I have two new hips and I'm starting to walk with them. I still have big metal bolts holding them together. Daddy calls me his bionic baby. I'm not sure what that means!

Anyway, as it's Baby Hip Health Awareness Week from the 11th to the 17th March to raise awareness for my condition, I wanted to do something for the wonderful charity that helped me and my family during what was a pretty tough time. Steps have been amazing and I am now doing a charity walk to raise as much awareness, oh and hopefully money for them as possible. We especially want to raise awareness and to make sure that if other Mummies and Daddies are worried about their children that they don't take no for an answer, my Mummy and Daddy didn't and now I can walk! Early diagnosis is very important!

Thanks for reading.
