Chuf's mission is to make life better for children and young people who are born with or who develop heart conditions by providing lifelong support to them and their families. Chuf supports children who receive treatment at Freeman Hospital and many other hospitals throughout the North of England.

Story

Thank you for visiting my page. I have always wanted to do something momentous to raise money for the Children’s Heart Unit at Freeman (CHUF), a charity that is very special to me. Recently I have become involved in fundraising for CHUF through my workplace and feel now is the perfect time to go a step further. I have set myself a challenge to complete The Great North 10k, which will take a huge amount of determination and training.

The Children’s Heart Unit at Freeman is one of just two centres in the UK with the facilities and skills to offer paediatric transplants and a bridge to transplants. Many critically ill babies and children come from all over the UK to be treated here. CHUF provides massive support to children receiving treatment at the unit, as well as their families and many other hospitals providing care for cardiac patients.

The unit in Newcastle is particularly close to my heart as this is where my own baby cousin, Hassan, was treated. He was born December, 2003 and was an amazing little joy. It’s my first real memory of being around a baby and it was so exciting to have a new baby cousin in the family. I will forever treasure the memories I have of the weekends spent with him, watching him try to take steps across the room and endlessly trying to make him laugh, all to become his favourite older cousin of course.

Shortly after his 1st birthday, Hassan was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart. He was the first child in Freeman Hospital to be put on the Berlin heart machine, whilst waiting for a heart transplant. The Berlin heart is an external air driven pump which took over the work for the left side of Hassan’s heart. It was heart-breaking to see someone so small and delicate in a hospital bed when it seemed like only moments ago he had been with us at home.

In April 2006, Hassan sadly passed away whilst still waiting for a heart transplant. Dealing with a loss so close to home can never get easier, but I hope that my efforts to bring awareness to this amazing cause, and Hassan’s story, will continue to give strength to his loving parents. He will remain part of our treasured memories forever.

There isn’t a child I have met that has ever been quite like Hassan, he was so precious, he instantly touched our hearts.

To the nurses and surgeons who met Hassan and treated him, myself and my family would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your care and compassion.
