In the slums of Dhaka, 4 million people live in shacks with no running water or sanitation. If their children become ill, they are likely to die as they can't afford medical treatment. We are working to help improve life for these often 'forgotten people.'

Story

Still running 2012...

Run for the Slum

In February 2010 I went to Jheelpur Slum in Dhaka. Click here to read about my visit. What I saw there has changed my whole perspective on life. Unable to walk away and pretend I’d not seen what I did, I shared my experiences with friends who have also been inspired to help. Together, we’ve set up the charity, ARBAN UK, supporting an NGO in Bangladesh which works to change the lives of people in the slums.

It’s about parents in the UK doing what they can to help parents in Bangladesh. We’re aiming to raise £30,000 to build and run a clinic in the slum. At the moment families don’t visit the doctor as they can’t afford to – there’s no NHS in Bangladesh. The money we raise will pay for a full time doctor to work in the slum so that parents don’t have to watch helpless, while their children suffer or die. Building has started and a doctor been employed. To see photos and find out more about what we are doing, please visit www.arban.org.uk

One of our fund raising initiatives is running and last year I ran the Bristol 10K.

A few years ago I would l have laughed at the idea of me running for 10 kilometres, but my life has changed in many ways since I became a mum. After the birth of my third child I caught sight of myself in a shop window and decided I didn’t want to stay like that for the rest of my life. I joined a gym, committed to going twice a week and have completely changed my attitude to exercise. I’ve built myself up from being incapable of running and not enjoying it to contemplating a 10K race and being hooked! This distance may not be much for many of you runners, but for me it will be a huge achievement.

So, please support me as I continue to Run for the Slum. I'm running the Bristol 10K again in May 2012 and we have also started a school fun run. I’m running to achieve a personal goal and I’m running for the mums I met in Jheelpur Slum, to help make their lives a little easier.
