Che cos'è HHUGS?

HHUGS è un'associazione fondata negli UK (http://hhugs.org.uk/), la sigla sta per "Helping Households under Great Stress" (aiutare famiglie sottoposte a forte stress). Provvede a fornire sostegno economico, psicologico e pratico alle famiglie che hanno avuto difficoltà in seguito alle leggi anti-terrorismo negli UK e all'estero.

Dall'11 settembre 2001, ben 2710 famiglie hanno subito gli effetti di queste leggi - nel 54% dei casi i detenuti sono stati rilasciati, senza pagare la cauzione. Molti sono stati arrestati senza alcun crimine specifico ma sono comunque detenuti senza possibilità di cauzione o agli arresti domiciliari, sebbene non vi sia un'accusa concreta.

Per ogni arresto avvenuto, viene violata una casa e la famiglia soffre la perdita di un caro, di colui che si occupava di portare il cibo in tavola, o di un figlio. La vita per loro non sarà mai la stessa. Sono soli, vulnerabili, ed hanno un bisogno disperato di aiuto!

Per molte famiglie anche le cose più ordinarie diventano difficili, in quanto faticano a mantenere i rapporti coi propri cari - spesso imprigionati a migliaia di km di distanza.

La missione di HHUGS è di abolire questa "colpevolezza per associazione", in cui la famiglia intera ci rimette ingiustamente a causa di sospetti di terrorismo del marito, o del padre, e così via...

Crediamo che essi non debbano essere né incolpati né discriminati a causa del fatto che un loro caro o membro della famiglia sia accusato o sospettato di un crimine.

Che cosa fa di concreto HHUGS?

Fornisce aiuto e sostegno in ogni modo possibile, soprattutto dal punto di vista psicologico ed economico, alle famiglie bisognose che hanno subito gli effetti delle leggi/politiche anti-terrorismo (leggere sopra per più informazioni).

Più nel dettaglio:
- Rendere autosufficienti donne e giovani, in modo che sviluppino le abilità necessarie per sostenere sé stessi e la propria famiglia;
- Ridurre l'isolamento sociale;
- Ristabilire onore, dignità, sicurezza di sé;
- Istruire sul sistema di giustizia criminale;
- Migliorare le abilità (emotive, psicologiche...) necessarie per fronteggiare gli ostacoli e le sfide che si presenterano;
- Offrire un sostengo "amichevole", oltre che psicologico;
- Migliorare in generale la salute mentale;
- Migliorare in generale la salute fisica.

HHUGS è operativa dal 2004 ed è la prima associazione di questo tipo ad operare negli UK; essa rappresenta uno spiraglio di luce per le famiglie che lottano per orientarsi e sopravvivere nella società.

What is HHUGS?

Helping Households Under Great Stress (HHUGS) is a UK registered charity that exists to provide financial, emotional, and practical support and advice to Muslim households impacted by counter-terrorism, national security and extremism-related laws, policies and procedures, in the UK and abroad.

Since 11 September 2001, 2,710 families have been impacted by a terrorism related arrest in the UK, of which 54% result in the detainee being released without charge.  Some have never been never prosecuted for any specific criminal offence but are instead detained without charge or subjected to Terrorism Preventative Investigative Measures (T-PIMs), a regime under which suspects are placed under house arrest and have severe restrictions placed on their freedom of association, movement and ability to communicate with others, despite the fact they have not been charged.

For every arrest and detention, a home has been raided and ravaged and a family has suffered the loss of a loved one, a bread winner, a dear husband. a much loved son. These are homes where life will never be the same.

For many of these families, ordinary daily tasks become increasingly difficult as they struggle to make ends meet and maintain physical contact with their loved ones, often imprisoned hundreds of miles away.  Moreover, due to the nature of the crimes for which their loved ones are accused, these families find themselves ostracized and marginalized from both the religious and ethnic communities that they belong to as well as the wider society. They are lonely, vulnerable, and desperate for help.

What does HHUGS do to help these families?

Our mission is to banish the ‘guilty by association’ label experienced by the wives and children of terror suspects. We believe that they should not be penalized and discriminated against on the basis that their loved ones are accused of involvement in criminal activity.

We strive to bring relief and support to households devastated by anti-terror raids by offering friendship in addition to emotional, financial, and practical support, advice and information through a country-wide network of dedicated volunteers.

Most importantly, we aim to empower these vulnerable women and children so that they develop the necessary skills and confidence to not only support themselves but to also become part of a support network for others in similar difficulties. The aim of our work with prisoners' families is to help them achieve the outcomes below.

• Increase understanding of the criminal justice system
  
• Improve mental and physical health.
