Together, if we raise just £540 we will fund a Gurkha Welfare Pension for an entire year!!

Just £45 a month (7,000 Nepalese Rupees) will pay for a Gurkha Welfare Pension, a rate calculated using a 'shopping basket' of basic goods such as rice, vegetables, cooking oil and simple toiletries. Whilst modest in our terms, it provides just enough to buy rations for the month and the occasional luxury.

To be eligible to receive a Welfare Pension from the Trust, Gurkhas must have served with the Brigade or be the widow of an ex-serviceman. They must also be living in poverty and distress and not be eligible for an Army Pension. 

On May 10th I will be running the Leeds Half Marathon wearing The Corps of Commissionaires full dress uniform, to raise money in support of a truly fantastic & inspiring group of people, The Gurkhas.

2015 is a year of celebration, marking the bicentennial of loyal Gurkha service to the British Crown. Since its formation Gurkhas have conducted themselves with distinction in numerous conflicts alongside their British colleagues. The Brigade of Gurkhas has won no less than 26 Victoria Crosses throughout its illustrious history, each with a tale of extraordinary courage. 

Gurkhas are marked by their graciousness, loyalty and great courage. As reserved and mild-mannered in daily life as they are fearless and tenacious in battle, they are equally dignified people and excellent soldiers. 

The Gurkha Welfare Trust is the leading Gurkha charity who provide financial, medical and community aid to Gurkha ex-servicemen of the British Crown, providing welfare to enable Gurkha ex-servicemen and their dependants to live out their lives with dignity, primarily in Nepal but increasingly in the UK and elsewhere. 

Gurkha 200 Bicentenary Appeal – Our Duty of Care

45 years ago, upon learning that thousands of Gurkha veterans were facing destitution in Nepal, the British public responded in their thousands. An appeal was launched and The Gurkha Welfare Trust was established to ensure that all ex-Gurkhas and their dependants live out their lives with dignity. 

Now, 45 years on from that original appeal, the GWT is once again calling on the British people to support the Gurkhas. These once fit and strong men and women have aged. Now in their 80s and 90s, their bodies are frail and their minds tired. They need help with living independently and treatment for their complex medical needs.

The ‘Our Duty of Care’ Appeal aims to raise £6 million to fund an expansion of their medical programme in Nepal to ensure our Gurkha pensioners get the medical care they
