The Lakeland 50 is one the greatest ultra running challenges in Europe, perhaps the world. At 50 miles it's almost double the distance of a marathon, it's on rough terrain and there's approximately 3100m (approx 3 x height of Snowdon) of ascent to deal with. Now add running at night and map reading to the mix and we have an event.
The route starts from the Northern end of Ullswater within the grand Dalemain Estate before following the Eastern shore line as far as Howtown. A quick climb and descent followed by a trek along the banks of Haweswater to Mardale Head. The route from here visits Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite before the final climb and descent to the finish at Coniston. A truly amazing route ignored by the masses. There are 6 manned checkpoints on the course which are compulsory to visit.
The event starts at 12:00 noon on Saturday 30 July from Dalemain Estate. The time limit for the event is 24 hours with the elite mountain runners completing the course in approximately 8 hours. (I’m expecting it to take me approximately 14 hours.)
The harder it is, the greater the difficulties but 'Easy' and 'Achievement' are rarely part of the same sentence.
Donations are all for a good cause, Pendleside Hospice did a fantastic job looking after my gran and gave a great deal of comfort to my family. As an organisation that relies on donations to make up 75% of its running costs, any donation is really appreciated and will help the hospice to continue its great work.
