Story
As as sailor and ocean lover I have had peace of mind for many years that if I have ever come into difficulties on the water expert assistance is at hand from the RNLI. Thankfully I have never had to use the RNLI in an emergency situation, but I have had fellow team mates, sailors and friends that have relied on the services and been successfully rescued. This is what motivates me to challenge myself for this bike ride, as the support can help to continue the excellent service for all water users, not just sailors.
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.
The RNLI is funded entirely from donations, yet it provides an essential public service. Here are some facts:
- The cost: £140.6m in 2011 - and receives no cash from the government
- 2012: Launches - 8,905, People rescued - 7,976, lives saved - 354
- Tower Lifeboat station is the busiest station in the RNLI
