Now for a little bit about the cause.
Their aims are currently fourfold and target (1) supporting education, (2) supporting fair trade, (3) supporting much needed trade unions, and (4) supporting the legalisation of abortion.
(1) At the heart of NSC's Education Campaign is solidarity with the Nicaraguan government and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to reduce adult illiteracy and to meet the Millennium Development Goal of a complete primary education for all by 2015. This goal, set by the United Nations in 1999, receded as successive governments were forced by the IMF and the World Bank to cut public spending.
(2) The NSC works in solidarity with organisations in Nicaragua that promote social and economic justice including fair trade producers and education networks.
At national level in Britain they work with organisations and coalitions including the Fairtrade Foundation and Trade Justice Movement, highlighting Nicaragua as an example of the devastating consequence of trade injustice on the majority of the population, and the benefits of fair trade. A major part of their work is educational: to disseminate information and raise awareness in the UK of social and economic issues affecting Nicaragua. They also support Wales NSC, our local groups and 13 towns and communities with twinning links in Nicaragua.
Their main areas of work are organising speaker tours in the UK, campaigning and lobbying activities, study tours to Nicaragua and distributing reports and briefings.
(3) Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign (and then NSCAG) has worked with trade unions both in the UK and in Nicaragua since the time of the Revolution in 1979. The current focus of their work is the Youth Unionists Project linking young unionists in the UK and Nicaragua. This included a speaker tour in this country and a delegation to Nicaragua in both 20010 and 2011.
This work emphasises the continuing importance of solidarity including links between sister unions. Examples are the NUT with ANDEN (Nicaraguan teachers' union), UNISON with UNE (public service union) and FETSALUD (health workers' union), and CWU with FESC (communications union).
(4) Niciraguar is one of the very few countries remaining where all forms of abortion are still illegal. Nicaraguan Obbudsman for Human Rights, Omar Cebzas, confirmed recently that he has formally requested that the Nicaraguan Supreme Court overturn the current law that declares all abortion illegaal, even therapeutic abortion, which only applies in cases of extreme hardship and particularly when the mother's own life is in danger from her pregnancy. This clearly has to change.
