My story

In October I'll be running the Amsterdam Marathon to raise money for the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust.

Miriam Hyman was a family friend who sadly lost her life in the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005. She was travelling to work on the bus that exploded in Tavistock Square. Her family have set up a registered charity in her name, the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust (charity no. 1124032), to raise money for a children's eye care centre in the Indian state of Orissa. Their commitment to creating positive outcomes from this tragedy is both impressive and inspiring, and I very much hope you will help me to support their efforts.

I aim to raise £1,000 to enable the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust, which works in partnership with the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Bhubaneshwar, India, to continue its important and groundbreaking work. My specific goal is to aid them in building capacity in the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre (MHCECC).

The L V Prasad Eye Institute is a globally recognised Centre of Excellence and a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the elimination of preventable blindness by the year 2020 (through the initiative Vision 2020: The Right to Sight). It is a pioneer in developing eye health models for underserved areas of the developing world.

The Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust has funded the development of the paediatric eye care centre within the L V Prasad Eye Institute, called the Miriam Hyman Children's Eye Care Centre (MHCECC). There is currently no other paediatric eye care facility in the state of Orissa, although 50% of all childhood blindness in India is preventable and treatable and can have life-changing consequences for those who suffer from it. This centre provides high-quality care for all children who need it, irrespective of their parents' ability to pay.

You can find more information on the Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust's website: www.miriam-hyman.com

Running the marathon is a huge challenge for me (I'm terrified! and need to get training!!) Thanks so much for your support.

We support a sight-saving Children's Centre in India, within one of the best known Eye Institutes in that country. The incidence of blindness is very high in India and it is a privilege to be able to assist those who cure avoidable blindness.
